Discussion:
What does it mean to be reverent?
When can we be reverent?

Object Lesson:
“A Reverent Atmosphere”

For this object lesson, you will need:

  • a metal pot
  • a plastic or wooden serving spoon
  • a glass cup
  • a metal teaspoon

First, bang the bottom of the pot with the serving spoon.  Ask everyone to describe the sound.  Point out that this loud noise makes it difficult to hear other sounds and voices around us (including the Holy Ghost).  When we are loud, we are not being reverent.

Next, tap the side of the cup with the teaspoon.  Again, ask everyone to describe the sound.  Explain that being reverent doesn’t require us to be silent.  The bright, soft sound of the cup helps us to feel good inside, while the harsh banging of the pot is disturbing.  We can be reverent anytime and anywhere as we seek to create a reverent atmosphere not only around us, but especially in our minds and our hearts.

Scripture:
Jesus Cleansing the Temple – Matthew 21:12-16; John 2:13-17
Discussion:
How can we be reverent with our mouths, eyes, ears, hands, feet, hearts, and minds?

Activity:
Print out enough of the mind pictures so there is enough for everyone.  Have each family member draw something(s) they can think about to help them be reverent.
