A Call to Action!

on November 22, 2014

Recently, I have been involved with a discussion of principles on Facebook.  This post includes one of my comments.  It contains an encouraging call to action, in accordance with the scripture:

“What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, and one of you say unto them, ‘Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled’; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone” (James 2:14-17).

We are often capable of doing and being much more than we think – or even believe.

“Be a woman [or man] of Christ. Cherish your esteemed place in the sight of God. He needs you. This Church needs you. The world needs you” (Elder Jeffrey R. Holland). You cannot wait until you think you are ready. You can either wait for trials to come to you, or you can trust in the Holy Spirit, your Savior, Jesus Christ, and your Heavenly Father as you press forward faithfully, valiantly, and courageously. “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6). You can march forward, letting him guide you as you continually hold fast to the rod of iron, or fearfully cling to it. Those who did so in Lehi’s Dream “were ashamed… and they fell away into forbidden paths and were lost.” (1 Nephi 8:24-28)

You can choose to hide behind barriers established by yourself, or you can march forth, bedecked with the whole armor of God, to face the enemy head on. “Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Ephesians 6:10-12).  Stand for truth and righteousness and hold your standard high! “Verily, verily, I say unto you, I give unto you to be the light of this people. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Behold, do men light a candle and put it under a bushel? Nay, but on a candlestick, and it giveth light to all that are in the house” (3 Nephi 12:14-15).

If you go forth with faith, “the Lord will go before you, and the God of Israel shall be your rearward” (3 Nephi 20:42). Trust in him, and he will support you every step of the way. “Again I say unto you that if ye will enter in by the way, and receive the Holy Ghost, it will show unto you all things what ye should do” (2 Nephi 32:5).

And if the Spirit tells you to fight against the darkness, remember that “the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them” (1 Nephi 3:7). Seek to fulfill your divine mission, and you will assist in Heavenly Father’s “work and… glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man” just as Christ did. (Moses 1:39) That’s the call to action we all undertook by keeping our First Estate. “Never give in. Never surrender. Never allow despair to overcome your spirit” (President Dieter F. Uchtdorf).

If you choose to wait until you feel that you are ready, you will never be ready. Trust in your Heavenly Father who loves you and knows you better than you know yourself! “Do what is right; be faithful and fearless. Onward, press onward, the goal is in sight” (Hymns 237). But, you will not see it if you look down, close your spiritual eyes, or turn away from the Tree of Life. “Be watchful unto prayer continually, that ye may not be led away by the temptations of the devil, that he may not overpower you, that ye may not become his subjects at the last day” (Alma 34:39).
