Simple Ideas for Primary 2: Lesson 23

on June 18, 2016

The Good Shepherd, The Sheep, The Thief, The Wolf, The Hireling, and The Goats

Prepare the visuals below for your class.  Let reverent children take turns choosing a visual to discuss.  You can also use the scripture references below.

The Good Shepherd

  • The Good Shepherd & The Sheep – Christ and his true disciples

John 10:14-16

“I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.  As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.  And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.”

  • The Thief – Seeks dishonest gain, advantage, and/or control

John 10:1-2,10

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep… The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

  • The Wolf – Deceitful and cunning followers of Satan

Matthew 7:15

“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.”

  • The Hireling – Views caring for the sheep as a responsibility, but not a priority

John 10:12-13

“But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.  The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.”

  • The Sheep & The Goats – Goats view caring for the sheep and shepherd as unnecessary or unimportant

Matthew 25:31-36

“When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.”
