Simple Ideas for Primary 2: Lesson 30

on July 22, 2016

Teaching a group of young children can be a daunting task.  So, my husband and I like to keep our lessons simple.  Here’s the basic schedule we follow:

  • 5-10 minute Bathroom Break
  • 5-10 minute Sharing (Class members share ways they Chose the Right during the week)
  • 20-25 minute Lesson
  • 15-20 minute Art Activity

In each of my Simple Ideas for Primary 2 Lessons posts, I’ll be sharing our basic lesson outline, Art Activity ideas, etc.  Also, be sure to check out the Free BI Originals tab for more resources!

Primary 2: Lesson 30 ~ Outline

Review: I Am Happy When I CTR

Game: Play “Grow a Flower” or “Build a Snowman” (aka. Hangman)

  • Make sure there are enough blanks drawn on the board for the word “Obedient”.
  • Have the children take turns guessing letters until they guess the word correctly.
  • Ask the children what the word Obedient means.

Game: Teacher Says (aka. Simon Says)

  • Point out that it’s not always easy to be obedient.  In order to be obedient, we have to be humble and listen carefully.  In order to be obedient to Heavenly Father, we have to be humble, study the scriptures, and listen carefully to the Spirit.

Scripture Story: Jesus in Gethsemane (Matthew 26:36-46)

  • Tell the story of Jesus in Gethsemane.
  • Explain that Jesus was the perfect example of obedience.  He was willing to do anything Heavenly Father asked – even when he knew it would be very difficult.

Scripture Story Discussion: The 2,000 Stripling Warriors

Stripling Warriors Story Figures

  • Briefly tell the back-story of the 2,000 Stripling Warriors.  You may use the visuals above, if desired.
  • Alma 53:20-21 “And they were all young men, and they were exceedingly valiant for courage, and also for strength and activity; but behold, this was not all—they were men who were true at all times in whatsoever thing they were entrusted. Yea, they were men of truth and soberness, for they had been taught to keep the commandments of God and to walk uprightly before him.”
  • Ask: What kind of young men were the Stripling Warriors?  What had they been taught?
  • Alma 57:21 “Yea, and they did obey and observe to perform every word of command with exactness; yea, and even according to their faith it was done unto them; and I did remember the words which they said unto me that their mothers had taught them.”
  • Explain that Helaman led the Stripling Warriors into battle.  Ask: Did the young men listen carefully to Helaman?  How do you know?
  • Alma 58:39-40 “And those sons of the people of Ammon, of whom I have so highly spoken, are with me in the city of Manti; and the Lord has supported them, yea, and kept them from falling by the sword, insomuch that even one soul has not been slain. But behold, they have received many wounds; nevertheless they stand fast in that liberty wherewith God has made them free; and they are strict to remember the Lord their God from day to day; yea, they do observe to keep his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments continually; and their faith is strong in the prophecies concerning that which is to come.”
  • Ask: How were the Stripling Warriors blessed for their obedience?
