Simple Ideas for Primary 2: Lesson 31

on July 29, 2016

Teaching a group of young children can be a daunting task.  So, my husband and I like to keep our lessons simple.  Here’s the basic schedule we follow:

  • 5-10 minute Bathroom Break
  • 5-10 minute Sharing (Class members share ways they Chose the Right during the week)
  • 20-25 minute Lesson
  • 15-20 minute Art Activity

In each of my Simple Ideas for Primary 2 Lessons posts, I’ll be sharing our basic lesson outline, Art Activity ideas, etc.  Also, be sure to check out the Free BI Originals tab for more resources!

Primary 2: Lesson 31 ~ Outline

  • What are some laws and rules that you know?
  • Point out that rules and laws are meant to keep you and others safe.

Scripture Discussion: Article of Faith 12

  • “We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.”
  • How can you follow Article of Faith 12?

Driving Game:

  • Prepare the traffic sign visuals below before class.
  • Set up the traffic signs around the room.
  • Make sure the children know what each sign means.
  • Have the children “drive” around the room, following the signs.
  • (If you would like the children to remain in their seats, have them pretend that their chairs are cars.  As you hold up each sign, they should act out what they should do to follow it.)
  • Ask: What would happen if everyone chose to ignore traffic laws and drive how they wanted?

* You can also use the following references for the Driving Game, if desired:

  • Hymn 239 “Choose the right when a choice is placed before you.  In the right the Holy Spirit guides; and its light is forever shining o’er you, when in the right your heart confides.”
  • President Uchtdorf  Stop it!  We have to stop judging others and replace judgmental thoughts and feelings with a heart full of love for God and His children.”
  • Mosiah 3:19 “[Yield] to the enticings of the Holy Spirit”

Scripture Story & Discussion: The Ten Commandments & The Beatitudes

  • Exodus 20:3-4, 7-8, 12-17 “Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image… Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain… Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy… Honour thy father and thy mother… Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. Thou shalt not covet…”
  • Matthew 5:3-12 “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.”
  • Explain that the Beatitudes helped to replace the old law (the Law of Moses) with the new law – established by Jesus Christ. It gave the people more freedom, at the same time expecting greater responsibility.
  • Point out that the best laws will honor God’s laws. We should do what we can to encourage good laws where we live.
