Simple Ideas for Primary 2: Lesson 41

on October 14, 2016

Teaching a group of young children can be a daunting task.  So, my husband and I like to keep our lessons simple.  Here’s the basic schedule we follow:

  • 5-10 minute Bathroom Break
  • 5-10 minute Sharing (Class members share ways they Chose the Right during the week)
  • 20-25 minute Lesson
  • 15-20 minute Art Activity

In each of my Simple Ideas for Primary 2 Lessons posts, I’ll be sharing our basic lesson outline, Art Activity ideas, etc.  Also, be sure to check out the Free BI Originals tab for more resources!

Primary 2: Lesson 41

Scripture Discussion: Jesus Christ’s Role in Heavenly Father’s Plan

  • 2 Nephi 9:10 ~ “O how great the goodness of our God, who prepareth a way for our escape from the grasp of this awful monster; yea, that monster, death and hell, which I call the death of the body, and also the death of the spirit.”
  • Ask: How did Heavenly Father’s plan prepare for our salvation?
  • Mosiah 3:17 ~ “And moreover, I say unto you, that there shall be no other name given nor any other way nor means whereby salvation can come unto the children of men, only in and through the name of Christ, the Lord Omnipotent.”
  • Remind the children about the Council in Heaven.  Tell them that Heavenly Father shared his plan for the salvation of His children.  Then, Jesus Christ offered to be our Savior.  Because of Heavenly Father’s plan, we can overcome the effects of the Fall of Adam and Eve and live with Heavenly Father again! (see 2 Nephi 2:21-27)

Scripture Discussion: Physical Death

  • Alma 11: 42-43 ~ “Now, there is a death which is called a temporal death; and the death of Christ shall loose the bands of this temporal death, that all shall be raised from this temporal death. The spirit and the body shall be reunited again in its perfect form; both limb and joint shall be restored to its proper frame, even as we now are at this time; and we shall be brought to stand before God, knowing even as we know now, and have a bright recollection of all our guilt.”
  • Explain to the children that after Christ died, he was resurrected.  The Resurrection overcame physical (or temporal) death.

Scripture Discussion: Spiritual Death

  • Alma 12:16 ~ “And now behold, I say unto you then cometh a death, even a second death, which is a spiritual death; then is a time that whosoever dieth in his sins, as to a temporal death, shall also die a spiritual death; yea, he shall die as to things pertaining unto righteousness.”
  • Explain to the children that the Atonement of Jesus Christ gives us the opportunity to repent from our sins so that we can be purified to return and live with Heavenly Father again someday.  But, that’s not all that the Atonement can do for us…

Use the picture cards above as visuals to illustrate the scriptures below.  Let reverent children take turns choosing and discussing each card and scripture.

  • Sins & Transgressions (picture: boy at broken window)

Alma 7:13 ~ “Now the Spirit knoweth all things; nevertheless the Son of God suffereth according to the flesh that he might take upon him the sins of his people, that he might blot out their transgressions according to the power of his deliverance; and now behold, this is the testimony which is in me.”

  • Pain & Sickness (picture: girl sick in bed)

Alma 7:11 ~ “And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people.”

  • Infirmities (picture: Jesus helping boy with crutch)

Alma 7:12 ~ “And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities.”

  • Weaknesses (picture: boy looking at portrait)

Ether 12:27 ~ “And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.”

  • Grief & Sorrow (picture: boy helping sad girl)

Mosiah 14:4 ~ “Surely he has borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows; yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.”

  • Death (picture: Jesus’ resurrection)

2 Nephi 9:7 ~ “Wherefore, it must needs be an infinite atonement—save it should be an infinite atonement this corruption could not put on incorruption. Wherefore, the first judgment which came upon man must needs have remained to an endless duration. And if so, this flesh must have laid down to rot and to crumble to its mother earth, to rise no more.”
