Simple Ideas for Primary 2: Lesson 34

Teaching a group of young children can be a daunting task.  So, my husband and I like to keep our lessons simple.  Here’s the basic schedule we follow:

  • 5-10 minute Bathroom Break
  • 5-10 minute Sharing (Class members share ways they Chose the Right during the week)
  • 20-25 minute Lesson
  • 15-20 minute Art Activity

In each of my Simple Ideas for Primary 2 Lessons posts, I’ll be sharing our basic lesson outline, Art Activity ideas, etc.  Also, be sure to check out the Free BI Originals tab for more resources!

Primary 2: Lesson 34 ~ Outline

Scripture Story: Daniel and the King’s Meat (Daniel 1)

  • Tell or have the children act out the story of Daniel and the King’s Meat.
  • Ask: Why wouldn’t Daniel and his friends eat the King’s meat?
  • Explain to the children that Daniel and his friends chose to be true to the commandments they had been taught.  By being obedient and true to their faith, Daniel and his friends were blessed.

Scripture Story: Daniel in the Lion’s Den (Daniel 6)

  • Tell or have the children act out the story of Daniel in the Lion’s Den
  • Ask: Why do you think Daniel chose to pray, even when he knew he might die for doing so?
  • Explain to the children that when we choose the right, no matter the consequences, Heavenly Father will always bless us.
  • Ask: How did the king feel when Daniel was thrown into the lion’s den?
  • Explain that the king loved Daniel.  When Daniel was thrown into the lion’s den, he chose to pray and fast for him to be safe – despite the law not to pray.  The next day, the king set Daniel free, changed the law, and punished those who had done wrong.

  • Mosiah 4:30 ~ “But this much I can tell you, that if ye do not watch yourselves, and your thoughts, and your words, and your deeds, and observe the commandments of God, and continue in the faith of what ye have heard concerning the coming of our Lord, even unto the end of your lives, ye must perish. And now, O man, remember, and perish not.”
  • Have reverent children take turns drawing a card.  Discuss the card with the appropriate scripture below.

  • True in Thought ~ “Look unto me in every thought; doubt not, fear not.” ~ Doctrine and Covenants 6:36
  • True in Word ~ “Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things.  For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips.” ~ Proverbs 8:6-7
  • True in Deed ~ “Therefore, O my son, whosoever will come may come and partake of the waters of life freely; and whosoever will not come the same is not compelled to come; but in the last day it shall be restored unto him according to his deeds.” ~ Alma 42:27
