Scripture Discussion: Righteous Intentions & A Pure Heart

  • “Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart” (Psalms 24:3-4)
  • Explain to the children that even when we have righteous intentions, Satan can still deceive us.

Scripture Discussion: Physical Emotions vs. Spiritual Feelings

  • Moroni 7:12-13 ~ “Wherefore, all things which are good cometh of God; and that which is evil cometh of the devil; for the devil is an enemy unto God, and fighteth against him continually, and inviteth and enticeth to sin, and to do that which is evil continually. But behold, that which is of God inviteth and enticeth to do good continually; wherefore, every thing which inviteth and enticeth to do good, and to love God, and to serve him, is inspired of God.”
  • Physical emotions are responses to things that happen to you. Satan will use your emotions to manipulate you.  Satan’s manipulations distort and exaggerate the truth.
  • Spiritual feelings from Heavenly Father are messages from him that are always meant to help you. Spiritual feelings bring understanding and peace.

Discussion: Evil Intentions

  • Explain to the children that good people have good intentions, while evil spirits have evil intentions. When we have good intentions, but still make a wrong choice, it does not make us evil.  So, we should not feel bad about ourselves and who we are, but it is good to feel sorry for what we did.
  • When we make a wrong choice, Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ want us to turn to them so they can help us be purified by the atonement.  They want us to be happy and remember how good we are for our good intentions.

Scripture Discussion: Light and Darkness (Lehi’s Dream)

  • 3 Nephi 13:22-24 ~ “The light of the body is the eye; if, therefore, thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If, therefore, the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! No man can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and Mammon.”
  • 2 Nephi 28:8 ~ “And there shall also be many which shall say: Eat, drink, and be merry; nevertheless, fear God—he will justify in committing a little sin; yea, lie a little, take the advantage of one because of his words, dig a pit for thy neighbor; there is no harm in this; and do all these things, for tomorrow we die; and if it so be that we are guilty, God will beat us with a few stripes, and at last we shall be saved in the kingdom of God.”
  • 2 Nephi 28:21-22 ~ “And others will he pacify, and lull them away into carnal security, that they will say: All is well in Zion; yea, Zion prospereth, all is well—and thus the devil cheateth their souls, and leadeth them away carefully down to hell. And behold, others he flattereth away, and telleth them there is no hell; and he saith unto them: I am no devil, for there is none—and thus he whispereth in their ears, until he grasps them with his awful chains, from whence there is no deliverance.”
  • The Prophet Joseph Smith said: “All beings who have bodies have power over those who have not. The devil has no power over us only as we permit him. The moment we revolt at anything which comes from God, the devil takes power.”
  • Explain that Satan works in subtle ways. (see Moses 4:5 and Alma 12:4)  Instead of turning off the light, he’ll dim it a little.  But, the light is still on.  So, he’ll keep it just slightly dim until we are use to the dimness.  Then, he’ll dim it just a bit more.  Again, the light is still on.  He continues to do this until we are able to look at ourselves and realize how much darkness we have let into our lives.  It is even so with the mist of darkness in Lehi’s Vision of the Tree of Life. (see 1 Nephi 8:23 and 1 Nephi 12:17)  It is just a mist of darkness – the barest amount.  But, a mist is only the beginning of what Satan can do.

Scripture Discussion: Pray Always

  • Ask: How can we defeat Satan?
  • 3 Nephi 18:18-20 ~ “Behold, verily, verily, I say unto you, ye must watch and pray always lest ye enter into temptation; for Satan desireth to have you, that he may sift you as wheat. Therefore ye must always pray unto the Father in my name; And whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, which is right, believing that ye shall receive, behold it shall be given unto you.”
  • Doctrine and Covenants 10:5 ~ “Pray always, that you may come off conqueror; yea, that you may conquer Satan, and that you may escape the hands of the servants of Satan that do uphold his work.”
  • Alma 13:28-29 ~ “But that ye would humble yourselves before the Lord, and call on his holy name, and watch and pray continually, that ye may not be tempted above that which ye can bear, and thus be led by the Holy Spirit, becoming humble, meek, submissive, patient, full of love and all long-suffering; Having faith on the Lord; having a hope that ye shall receive eternal life; having the love of God always in your hearts, that ye may be lifted up at the last day and enter into his rest.”
