Simple Ideas for Primary 2: Lesson 36

Teaching a group of young children can be a daunting task.  So, my husband and I like to keep our lessons simple.  Here’s the basic schedule we follow:

  • 5-10 minute Bathroom Break
  • 5-10 minute Sharing (Class members share ways they Chose the Right during the week)
  • 20-25 minute Lesson
  • 15-20 minute Art Activity

In each of my Simple Ideas for Primary 2 Lessons posts, I’ll be sharing our basic lesson outline, Art Activity ideas, etc.  Also, be sure to check out the Free BI Originals tab for more resources!

Primary 2: Lesson 36 ~ Outline

Attention Activity: Building a Strong House

  • Bring enough building blocks to class for each child.  If you don’t have building blocks, you can use paper and scissors to cut out shapes like the ones below:blockhouses
  • Instruct the children to build a strong house.  You can even remind them about the story of the three little pigs.
  • Explain that the materials we choose to build a house and the way we build a house are very important to consider for the strength of our house.
  • After the children have built their houses, ask: Do you think your house is very strong?
  • If necessary, tell the children what a foundation is.  Then, ask: If your house had a weak foundation, do you think it would still be strong?
  • Explain that if the foundation of a house is weak, it weakens the whole house.  Since the rest of the house is built upon the foundation, it must be strong to maintain the strength of the house.

Scripture Story: The Wise Man and The Foolish Man (3 Nephi 14:24-27)

  • Read or tell the story of The Wise Man and The Foolish Man.  If you want to, you can even sing the song.
  • Explain what it means to be wise and to be foolish.  You might even remind the children about the Parable of the Ten Virgins.
  • Ask: What are some wise choices you can make in your life to keep your house strong?  (You could make this into a game by having the children pass a ball or bean bag around until they each have a turn to answer.)

Scripture Discussion: Live a Life Founded on Christ

  • Helaman 5:12 ~ “And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.”
  • Explain that when we rely on Jesus Christ, our house will have a strong foundation.  No matter what trials and temptations we face in this life, they will not destroy our house if we live a life founded on Christ.  We must always put our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ first.

Coloring Activity: The Wise Man and The Foolish Man

  • Option 1: Print the following book on one piece of paper – front and back – the same direction.  When printed correctly and cut in half length-wise, the pages will fold nicely into a book.  Staple them to secure the pages.
  • Option 2: Print the following two pages on separate pieces of paper.  Cut each sheet into quarters – with one small book page on each.  Then, put the pages in order and staple them together.
  • Make sure the pages are in order before stapling them.  The words are directly from 3 Nephi 14:24-27.
