Butterfly Impressions

Treasures in Heaven

In the Sermon on the Mount, Christ taught, “lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:  For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matthew 6:20-21).

On this journey through mortal life, it is our challenge to have an eternal focus, rather than a temporal focus.  Lehi learned the essentialness of mastering this challenge quite acutely in the revelatory vision he was blessed to experience as recorded in the First Book of Nephi, chapter eight.  He learned that we must always keep our focus on the Tree of Life and its fruits of eternal love and happiness – not allowing ourselves to become distracted or ashamed by the worldly Great and Spacious Building of mocking, scorn, and pride.

“Wherefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men” (2 Nephi 31:20).

The chart below shows how the parables Jesus Christ taught during his mortal ministry centered around the principle of always having an eternal focus.  Although not a comprehensive list, we can see how imperative it is for us to apply this principle, merely by its common occurrence within the teachings of our Savior.
